A penalty settles it
Monday, October 06, 2008, 09:08
NEW Cross did enough to edge a midfield battle against their guests from Plymouth.
The only thing between the two sides was a 45th minute penalty kicked by Ryan Wotton.

AIDEN Messer had no luck at all in this narrow defeat for Newcross.
Twice the former Newton Abbot player got over the line and both times referee Steve Clark ruled no try had been scored.
Newcross opened with an early penalty from Clinton Mill.
Services forged into a 13-3 lead before Newcross pulled back a try through man of the match Messer after good work by scrum-half
Lewie Griffiths.
Newcross scrape win by a point in friendly
Monday, September 22, 2008, 09:20
Tries were scored by Louie Griffiths and Dan Wear with Aiden Messer kicking both conversions and two penalties.
The Aaron Printers man of the match award went to hooker and captain James Woodward.
In the absence of an appointed referee, Newcross official Clinton Mill was pressed into service, for which both sets of
players were grateful.
Newcross 2nd XV lost 17-7 to Crediton Hornets.
Tuckett signs for Newcross
Friday, September 19, 2008, 09:17
Tuckett, a former Newton Abbot colt, was at Withycombe last season while living nearby during his studies at Rolle College.
Chris Grice is ruled out at No.8 with shoulder injury.
Wing Tom Savage, who took a hat-trick off Argaum last week, has gone to university.
Steve Clark is unavailable as he is refereeing.
Tougher tests around corner
Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 09:49
Tom Savage and Chris Grice both scored try hat-tricks as the Kingsteignton-based newcomers ran Argaum ragged.
Argaum were the whipping boys of the division last season - played 14, lost the lot - so the result has to be put in context.
Marc Bayley, the New Cross chairman, said there will be tougher tests around the corner.
"Sides like Devonport High School, who came down last season, will be strong and Dartmouth appear to have made a good start
as well,"said Bayley.

"I have played against sides like Old Techs and Ilfracombe often enough in the past to know there are no easy points to
be had off them either.
"We have had a good start, but against Argaum we were playing at a completely different level to them. If we hadn't made
some silly mistakes, it would have been more than a hundred.
"What was good was that we played to the structure the coach wants and it worked."
Bayley picked up a knee injury in the win over Argaum, which will rule him out of Saturday's friendly against Ivybridge
2nd XV.
Because there are an odd number of clubs in Devon Two this season, someone always has a Saturday off and New Cross's turn
has come round early.
BUCKFASTLEIGH and Dartmouth have avoided long trips in the second round of the EDF Junior Vase.
Dartmouth have been drawn at home to Cornish side Veor while Buckfastleigh entertain Poole.
As Berkshire-based Farnham Royal are in the South West portion of the draw this season, there could have been some heavy
travelling involved!
Ties to be played on Saturday, September 27.
Kingsbridge are on the road in the EDF Senior Vase, but only as far as Tavistock. That game is going
New Cross crush Argaum on debut
Monday, September 15, 2008, 09:20
Devon Two
WING Tom Savage and centre Matt Douglas both scored try hat-tricks as Devon Two new boys New Cross ran Argaum off their
feet.
The Kingsteignton-based side were only formed a year ago and had to play a season of friendlies before being admitted to
a league.
Argaum had no answer to New Cross's incisive running and shipped seven tries in each half.
%3Cbody%3E%3Cdiv%20id%3D%22adDiv%22%3E%3CA%20HREF%3D%22http%3A//ads.anm.co.uk/ADCLICK/CID%3D0000b1394b63c08d00000000/AAMSZ%3D452x118/SITE%3DTHISISSDEV/AREA%3DSPORT/SUBAREA%3DRUGBY/ARTICLE%3D326938/acc_random%3D9428028687/pageid%3D/RS%3D10307.%22%20target%3D%22_new%22%3E%3CIMG%20SRC%3D%22http%3A//iad.anm.co.uk/house/1x1.gif%22%20ALT%3D%22Click%20here%21%22%20border%3D0%20style%3D%22margin-bottom%3A%200px%3B%22%3E%3C/A%3E%3C/div%3E
Had winger Savage not dropped the ball when he was over the line for a fourth try, the damage could have been a lot worse.
New Cross were ahead after two minutes when Clinton Mill popped over a penalty, and never looked back.
New Cross have picked up former Newton Abbot duo Chris Grice and Aiden Messer during the summer, both of whom scored tries.
Messer, later named the Aaron Printers man of the match, also slotted eight conversions. Rick Bull and Louie Griffiths had
a couple of tries each.
Crabs pile up points in warm-up outing
Friday, September 05, 2008, 09:11
SALCOMBE'S pre-season build-up continued with a runway 53-7 win over Newcross.
While the Crabs were at full strength, Newcross were struggling due to the after affects of a tough midweek game at Teignmouth.
Salcombe hit the ground running with tries from Rupert Bevan and Gardiner. Two Davey conversions made it 14-0.
Neil Elliott and Davey addded a try each to take the interval tally for 24-0.
Lee King and Peter Bastin came on as half-time replacements in the backs and combined to put Lewis Winzer over in the corner
for a try.

Although Newcross scored a consolation try in the last quarter, it was one-way traffic most of the time.
Man of the moment for Salcombe with three tries was No.8 Stuart Winzer.
Liam Wills scored the last of Salcombe's nine tries.
Friday 5th September 2008. Newton Abbot Select XV v New Cross This game was in remembrance
of Newton Abbot player Andrew Weeks who died suddenly earlier this year, aged just 33, Andrew was a former Newton Abbot 2nd
& 3rd XV player who had many friends in rugby from both sides & was due to join New Cross this season. The Newton
Abbot Select XV included guest players from Teignmouth Andy Kindmond & Paul Jelly, who are also both
ex Newton Abbot players.
A minutes silence was
held before kick off with both sets of players lined up in front of the grandstand.
New Cross started the brighter
of the two teams with scrum half Louie Griffiths crossing the line only for his try to be disallowed by whistle man Andy Bullivant,
who could not see the ball. As the hosts started to get themselves in the game, New Cross substitute centre Nathan Spencer,
who had replaced the injured Lee Darwood, scored a breakaway try with his first touch of the ball, after intercepting
from just inside the Newton half to score under the posts. Griffiths converted. Newton then
came on the attack with the ball going wide from close range Steven Baker dummied New Cross full back Clinton Mill out of
the game to score under the posts, which was converted.
New Cross wing Deon Andrews
who was having an impressive game then went close doing all the hard work of getting to the Newton line apart from getting the ball down as New Cross were held up & shoved back by the Newton pack. Newton then grabbed a second when full back Matt Rayner crossed the line after
good work from the Newton backline, conversion missed. Newton went into
the second half with their noses in front at 12 -7.
In the second half both
sides changed their teams around & it was the visitors who grabbed their second try, with the ball bobbling round on the
Newton 10 meter line substitute fly half Aiden Messer, a former Newton player who has joined New Cross this season, grabbed
his first of two when he collected the ball to sprint & score under the posts, Griffiths somehow missed the conversion. Messer
was again on the score sheet after a back row move involving club Chairman Marc Bayley who went open popping to the supporting
Griffiths who made a break before finding the supporting Messer who went over to score, Messer then dusted himself off
to add the extras. It wasn't too long before New Cross were again adding to their tally, with the ball going wide to inside
centre Matt Douglas who committed the Newton outside centre & winger before popping to winger Dan Weaver, a
complete newcomer to the game of rugby, on the half way line who used his lightning quick speed to run round the last line
of defense to score under the posts, Messer converted. New Cross then stretched their lead when winger Tom Savage intercepted
a Newton pass to again score under the posts, Messer amazingly sliced his conversion
wide.
This put New Cross 29
-12, who then decided to fall asleep & Newton hit back with two more tries the first by centre Danny Vickeridge who went
over after the ball had gone through the Newton backlines hands & the second minutes later & 2 minutes from time,
was when Newton were awarded a penalty try in front of the posts after a kicked ball through was followed up by a late tackle.
Paul Hooper converted for Newton. The game ended with New Cross' Griffiths sticking
a box kick deep into the Newton 22 & out of play.
After heavy defeats recently
against Teignmouth & Salcombe, this is just the result that New Cross needed going into their first ever league game
at home to Plymouth Argaum, kick off is at 3pm tomorrow from Five Lanes Kingsteignton. During
the game a collection of £600 was raised for the Ricky Grant Day Unit/Turner Ward of Torbay Hospital, which treats Cancer
patients.
Both clubs as well as the
Family & Friends of Andrew would like to thank both sets of players for the entertaining game, as well as the impressive
turn out of supporters who turned up to watch the game & help contribute to the funds raised.
Saturday 23rd August. Cullompton II 20 New Cross 22 New Cross kicked
off their preparation for their first league season with a warm up game away to Cullompton Second XV.
During the summer New Cross have had an influx of new players sign up, with a squad
of 23 travelling & as many missing for the first of 5 warm up games. With new signings James Woodward, Chris Grice
& Aiden Messer all making the starting line up.
With the game being played over 4 quarters, New Cross were the ones to put the
first points on the board, when flanker & club chairman Marc Bayley made a break before popping to last season coachs
player of the year scrum half Louie Griffiths who out paced 2 of his opponents to score under the posts, full back Clinton
Mill added the extras. With both teams making several changes in the second quarter, the hosts grabbed an unconverted try
to make it 7 -5, Mill then missed a penalty, & the hosts then scored another unconverted try to take the lead going into
the third quarter.
New Cross were soon back in front when Griffiths combined with Mill to put in debutant
captain & hooker James Woodward who went over in the corner. Conversion missed. New Cross then stretched their lead when
Griffiths again in on the action put in prop Simon Harris who used his power & pace to go over in the far corner.
Conversion missed. Debutant & former Newton Abbot number 8 Chris Grice was then sent to the bin for 10 minutes
for an infringement at a ruck. Cullompton took advantage of this by going over to score 2 more tries both again unconverted,
to make it 20 -17 with 4 minutes to play. Straight from the kick off New Cross won possesion took the ball into several phases
of play before spinning wide to find a 2 man overlap with outside centre Nathan Spencer going over to score. conversion
missed.
New Cross held on for the last 2 minutes to record a very impressive victory.
New Cross targeting promotion
Thursday, August 21, 2008, 10:43
NEW CROSS start the countdown to the rugby season this Saturday
with the first of four warm-up games.
The Kingsteignton-based side, who were formed last season, have been accepted into
the Devon Two division for the campaign ahead.
The club's aim is promotion at the first attempt and they starting as they mean
to go on with some serious preparations.
New Cross visit Cullompton this Saturday to play the 2nd XV, then make the short
trip to Teignmouth next Wednesday night to play the Reserves.
Salcombe entertain New Cross on the last Saturday in August, followed by an inaugural
meeting with near neighbours Newton Abbot on Friday, September 5.
%3Cbody%3E%3Cdiv%20id%3D%22adDiv%22%3E%3CA%20HREF%3D%22http%3A//ads.anm.co.uk/ADCLICK/CID%3D0000b1394b63c08d00000000/AAMSZ%3D452x118/SITE%3DTHISISSDEV/AREA%3DSPORT/SUBAREA%3DRUGBY/ARTICLE%3D282090/acc_random%3D451451862/pageid%3D/RS%3D%22%20target%3D%22_new%22%3E%3CIMG%20SRC%3D%22http%3A//iad.anm.co.uk/house/1x1.gif%22%20ALT%3D%22Click%20here%21%22%20border%3D0%20style%3D%22margin-bottom%3A%200px%3B%22%3E%3C/A%3E%3C/div%3E
New Cross was formed by a handful of former Newton Abbot players who were fed up
with the trials and tribulations of 3rd XV rugby.
The parting was a little fraught and the clubs decided it was prudent to let the
dust settle before meeting on the pitch.
They are coming together now to play a memorial match for Andrew Weekes.
Front-row forward Weekes died suddenly earlier this year aged just 33. He had played
for Newton Abbot, but had many friends at New Cross and had hinted he would be joining them for the season just around the
corner.
A new season has brought a clutch of new signings for New Cross, who have enough
strength in depth this season to start a 2nd XV.
Four former Newton Abbot players - Tim Prouse, Ryan Wotton, Henry Tucker and James
Ward - have all joined from Exeter side Wessex.
Second-row forward Prouse is being tipped as New Cross's captain for the season
ahead.
Stand-off Aiden Messer and back row Chris Grice have left Newton Abbot and made
the short trip across Kingsteignton to Five Lanes.
From further afield comes Trevor Cutler, a lock from Torquay Quins, and hooker
James Woodward.
Woodward is closer to 40 than 30 - he was 37 in May - but has a wealth of experience
in the Cornwall & Devon Division with Saltash.
Stuart Donnelly is carrying on as club coach, assisted by Jamie Hulse. The new
2nd XV will be managed by Phil Skeats and Rick Bull.
New Cross start the season with a home game against last season's Devon Two whipping
boys, Plymouth Argaum.
Their next two games are against Devonport High School Old Boys, who were relegated
from Devon One last season, and Buckfastleigh.
New Cross team secretary and player Clinton Mill said the club should have a reasonable
idea by the end of September how their season was going to pan out.
"Our first three games are against a cross section of what we are likely to find
in Devon Two this season," said Mill.
"Argaum struggled last year, DHSOBs came down and will want to go back up and Buckfastleigh
were closer to the top than the bottom but never looked like going up.
"Our aim is promotion and we will soon find out how we measure up against the sides
we are up against."
New Cross won't be distracted by cup competitions this season.
What they have done is fill as many blank Saturday's as possible with friendly
games against clubs from the next division up to test themselves even further.
Local rivals Topsham, Totnes and Salcombe are all fixtured for the league days
off.
NEW CROSS are training on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Five Lanes from 7pm.

NEWCROSS, who had no Devon Two game, defeated Ivybridge 2nd XV 20-19 at Kingsteignton.
